Route description:
From Hompland, 7 km north of Tonstad, several paths lead up into the mountains west of the valley. To Steindalsknuten, it is a 6.3 km walk from the road if you start south of Hompland by the Hemså river. You first walk across pasture land and up an old riding trail. You then join a tractor track that leads in to Steian. Here you turn left and continue up the gravel road until you see a sign from the road pointing to the path along the east side of Øvre Løyntjønn. Here you have to cross a bog before heading up to Heimrestøl. From there, the landscape becomes more open, the tree line is passed a little further up, and you have gone from the valley's spruce forest, through pine forest by Løyntjønn, the mountain birch belt, and come up onto the plateau. Here the hike continues up Grønheia and up towards Steindalsknuten at 748 metres above sea level, an elevation gain of 630 m from the valley. Here you have views over the mountain terrain in all directions. You should allow 5 hours for the round trip.
If you want a longer walk, the route to Falkeknuten is signposted and marked for another 3.5 km further north.
