Øygardstøl via Kjerag to Langavatn

Startsted
The hike starts at Øygardstøl / Kjerag Panoramic Restaurant, which is located at the top of the hairpin bends up from Lysebotn. Here there is a private pay-and-display car park as well as toilets intended for hikers.

Route description:
The route begins right by Kjerag Panoramic Restaurant at Øygardstøl. You have to cross three mountain peaks before reaching Kjerag, today's first milestone. The hike starts with an ascent that is steep for about 30 minutes, over scraped bare rock up to an 825-metre mountain peak. From the peak, you follow the ridge of the mountain for a short stretch, before heading down to a small stream valley situated at about 750 metres. From here, the second ascent to Kjerag begins, taking you up to about 870 metres above sea level. The ascent here is somewhat more demanding than the previous one, you have to do a bit of climbing and should allow about 30 minutes to the top, which this time you will cross. Walk down the mountain and cross yet another stream valley. Now the final and longest ascent to Kjerag remains of the hike. Once again there is scraped bare rock with handrails following the edge of the mountain upwards. The view gets finer and finer for every metre of elevation you make your way up. Allow a good half-hour for this ascent as well. The terrain flattens out as you reach the top, and you make your way quickly across the 1.5 km bare mountain plateau. At the end of the plateau, you walk across a wide gorge before arriving at the cairn at Nesatindane, which shows the way to, among other things, the Kjeragbolten boulder. From here, it is about a 3-minute walk to Kjeragbolten, which is wedged between two roughly 1,000-metre-high sheer mountain faces rising straight up from the Lysefjorden. If you are brave, you take the step out onto the rock. Kjerag has long had a great pull for both climbers and base jumpers. If you are really lucky, you might even get to experience a base jump from one of the exit points near the boulder, and if you haven't had goosebumps yet on the hike, you definitely will then!

The second part of the trip goes from Kjerag to Langavatn. Go back to the cairn at Nesatindane and follow the trail markers in the direction of Langavatn from here. The path goes in a south-easterly direction up the mountain, parallel to the ravine that goes down to the Kjeragbolten. You reach a peak at 1,075 metres before turning downwards towards the lush stream valley, incidentally the same one you crossed earlier in the day to get to the Kjeragbolten. When you are down from the mountain, you come to a trail junction; turn right here to the top of the U-shaped valley, where you come to another signposted trail junction. Here you should turn 90 degrees to the left and climb up a steep slope. Allow 10 minutes for this ascent. At the top you have a fine view over the power-line-free moors; the route continues over the mountain peak at 1,143 metres in a south-easterly direction. Aim for the prominent cairn at the top. It can be an advantage to set your compass for navigation from the cairn at the top, as everything looks the same here. Allow a good hour across the mountain plateau until you can begin the descent to Langavatn tourist cabin.
