On 4 January 1946, a four-engine British Coastal Command bomber crashed at Flerehei, Lunde. The aircraft had a crew of eight and was equipped for anti-submarine warfare. The plane, bearing the registration KK331, was on a mission to drop practice bombs at a specified location in the North Sea. The weather was poor, and the cause of the crash was likely misnavigation. The entire crew perished. Wreckage of the aircraft can still be found scattered around Flerehei.
Route description:
The walk starts at a small farm on Øyne. Follow the prepared forestry road to the top from here. Allow about an hour for the steep ascent. At the top, where the road goes down towards Midtstølsvatnet, turn right and follow the red markers up Glovreknuten. First in an easterly direction across a flat section, then up the knoll in a southerly direction.
After about 15 minutes you cross a stream and here the path turns east again, across a marshland. At the end of the marsh, the path goes up onto a small mound. From the top of the mound, the path turns in a southerly direction again up the rocky outcrops. On a flatter section you have to cross a marsh, and you come up to a small tarn on your left-hand side. Continue in the same direction up a small col, you now have the summit of Glovreknuten on your right-hand side. At the top of the col you look straight at Flerehei.
Continue onwards through the gently rolling landscape, pass a tarn on your right-hand side, and shortly afterwards cross a stream between two other tarns. Follow the left-hand side of the stream up onto a small knoll, from here you walk along the west side of the tarn before tackling the final ascent to Flerehei. First through a small valley depression and past some large boulders, then zig-zagging up a small slope, before the final gentle incline across marsh and heather moorland leads you to the plane wreck. The memorial stands a short distance further up relative to the remains of the aircraft.
